VOLUME 5; No.10                                                                     OCTOBER 1982

Dear Brethren;

GREETINGS IN THE NAME OF JESUS!

ANOTHER NON-DULL MONTH!
I was thinking as the month was slowly going by that I wouldn't have much to write about in this newsletter. I thought I would leave space on the back page for you-to write us a note. But the Lord knowing my thoughts sent opportunities my way. Kathy and I made a trip to Lae to pick up paint for the Primary School and to shop, on the way back we got stopped at a bridge they were repairing. We arrived at 11:00 and it would reopen at 4:00. At 2:00 we found out there was a road around. It cost us 80¢ toll as the village kids had shoved down some of the river bank- here we go: down a bush (I mean bush) trail, thru a village down to the river, across 20 feet-2 foot deep, UPPPPP the bank, down the trail to ford another part of the river 10 ft x 18in.; UPPPPdown thru to another part of the river, wait for a 2 wheel drive truck to finally realize he couldn't make it up the bank on the other side of the river, he backed off (Kathy got out and walked, Oh ye of little faith), I shot it thru the river 15 ft x 18in deep UPPPP and over the-bank, likkity split (thought we had the worst over), hello rain gullied bush road, finally back to the main road after hopping and bouncing the last mile or so. Cruising on down the road toward Goroka only to come to a sudden stop at another road block. This time we had to wait until 4:00pm. But oh boy, did we ever get our 80¢ out of the other road. It would have made a real good commercial for Subaru. Thank you Lord!

BIRTHDAY MONTH
This month was also birthday month for Kathy and me. If you want to know how old we are just add a year to last year's and you will know. Or just count the hair on my head.

JOE GOES HOME TO OPPOSITION
Joe Ku is a young man who has worked for me for the past few years and I have trained him with some of the printing equipment. This month he finally returned to his home village (the village where he was raised after he was kidnapped from his real village at a young age.) He went back to share the gospel with them. He sent a letter back after he had been there several weeks relating his welcome back. The area is a strong Catholic area and they didn't appreciate his coming and preaching from "just the Bible". He has faced heavy abuse in the market place especially from the Catholic priest of the area. They sent here to Goroka for the Bishop to come out and "straighten" out Joe. Then the local priest informed everyone in the market that he would be ringing for the Pope to come the next day. The next day Joe went to the priest's house only to have the door slammed in his face. Two boys from Joe's family have obeyed the Gospel and he said several more are studying as a result of the Catholic's attitude. Pray with us for Joe He should be returning to Goroka later this month.

SIGN OF THE END OF TIME
During this time of the year it is not uncommon for severe storms to build up during the afternoons. But it was an uncommon one that developed around the middle of the month. We experienced marble size hail for over 15 minutes. The local people had never seen it. We had some who said it was a sure sign of the end of the world. By the time it ended the ground was covered.

WE ARE NOW BIKEES
On Kathy's birthday we went to an auction and bought two Suzuki motor bikes. The kids already had them claimed as which would have which one. They are 25Occ road bikes.

GOROKA STATS
The Goroka congregation has begun to come up out of their recession. During the month of September our averages were:
Sunday AM- 81 Thursday PM- 137 (high of 161)  We had one baptism and three asking for prayers.

CAMP GRAND-CANNON
During September the kids took a vacation without us. They went up to Mt Hagen (we drove them) and spent a week with Joe & Rosabelle Cannon who have more or less adopted them as their grandkids. The kids had a week break between school terms.

SUGAR &, SPICE & CRUD THAT'S NOT NICE
When I was growing up my mother never came upstairs into our rooms because she always said she was afraid that something would come out and get her. I know what she meant. One day this month I noticed a "funny" (not ha, ha) odor coming from Jason's room,  I asked around and concluded that it could be his tennis shoes as his feet stink like my brother Greg's, but decided to look closer (almost a fatal mistake.) Jason HAD a bad habit of not cleaning out his lunch box every day. In different locations in his room: under the bed, in drawers, in the closet, in shelves, in trash, we found leftovers from several week's lunches. Oranges (mold colored, apples, bananas, sandwiches), You name it , it was there. After helping him clean up the room it does smell somewhat better. (His shoes still stink though.)

KATHY PREACHES HER FIRST SERMON
Kathy preached her first sermon to the ladies class last Thursday night. She was teaching on communion and said she was trying to get a point across. Too many people here hold the concept that taking communion forgives you of sin.

TWINKIE, TWINKIE LIKE GOLD
Papua New Guinea is moving up in the world. They now have Twinkies in one of the stores. They are still in the store; they cost 40¢ EACH. (I did buy a few though.)
