November - December 1989

Dear Brethren;

SEASON'S GREETINGS
Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. By the time you receive this newsletter Terasa will have arrived for a short visit. She had a spot of problem in that she didn't buy her ticket when the price was around $1000. Terasa called the other night and is expected to arrive in Auckland on the 16th of December and go back to Tulsa on the 4th of January. The airline tickets are now costing us almost twice what they quoted us last month, $1850.00. It win be worth seeing her perky little face after so long. Whoever said daddy's don't miss their little girls was TOTALLY incorrect.

In the past month we received telephone calls from two different congregations who help us. You can't know how much we appreciated them. Then I turned around and called a dear family in Canada, the David Lock family. He was shocked to say the least. They were in PNG when we were. It is really amazing how clear telephone conversations are halfway around the world.

Many things have been going on in our lives and the days just seem to fly by. (Not hard to do when I have been working 16 hours a day getting the printshop up and operating. I have worked my way back to 10-12 hour days at the shop. After the shop I come home and work on the computer for a few hours getting the WBS students lined out. But once the WBS was on computer it is so much quicker. We now have 999 enrolled with 321 into the Red Book.

The printshop was established as a commercial venture in Feb 1989. 1 had given some thought to a part-time printshop but I soon saw that as not feasible. When you operate a printing service people begin to rely on you when they need work done. We had many discussions with elders and Christians while on leave and were encouraged to remain on the mission field in mission work even if it meant doing secular work.
Our three years here have shown a real and definite need for Bible related materials in NZ, Fiji, and PNG churches. This is especially true with the Bible College needs and the World Bible School.

In view of the present working situation there are some positive aspects and some limitations. POSITIVE
(1) We are less dependent on the whim of churches and individuals for personal monthly support. (Let's be honest, it's hard to stay excited all the time about a work that is 12,000 miles away. Out of sight - out of mind ! Mission points within driving distance seem more logical to some.)
(2) There is less concern on our part as to whether we have enough support to stay on the field or not. (Having to wait for support or know if there is any even when the bills are in strains the family a wee bit.)
(3) The literature needs as seen for the South Pacific can be met by the abilities that God had given us. (We are where we believe we can best be used for the Kingdom's sake.)
(4) The "inward-looking" movement within a (seeming) majority of US churches dictates that if foreign mission work is to continue (and expand as conditions dictate they should) this unique opportunity should be pursued.
(5) Personal support thus provided by profit from the Printshop and secretarial work. Additional profits when available can be applied toward outreach needs.
(6) Literature needs can be provided at cost for the outreach program.

LIMITATIONS
(1) The hours demanded in setting up and running a commercial printshop limits the time available to write and translate Bible material literature.
(2) Time to go and spend in the islands for Bible Training Schools is restricted until workers are trained in operating the printing equipment.
(3) There is a tendency to become too commercially oriented and less time toward the true goal of the printshop (To provide Bible related literature at cost for the furtherance of the Kingdom throughout the South Pacific and the world).
(4) There might be a tendency to become less open in sharing the opportunities of outreach with churches and Christians in the US.
Balancing the positive aspects and the limitations is to be a constant action on our part. We intend to continue to share the possibilities of outreach with anyone interested. This will continue to be done through our newsletter.

FUTURE
Lord willing we hope to see the following:
(1) In 1989 the establishment of the Printshop as a viable commercial enterprise which will be able to supply Bible related literature at cost for the spread of the Gospel throughout the South Pacific. To also provide sufficient support to provide our personal support needs. (This is being achieved now.)
(2) By 1990 to provide additional support for outreach needs; partial support for a Bible College student from Papua New Guinea, airfares for Bible Training Schools to the islands, etc.
(3) In 1990- Bible Training Schools (BTS) in Papua New Guinea and in Fiji. These are to follow-up the World Bible School courses currently being sent out.
(4) A survey trip to Tonga-Vanuatu as per WBS courses and advertising.
(5) In 1990- the completion of a pre course book for the WBS courses to help students better understand the existence and nature of God and the authority of Christ before they begin the current courses.

DREAMS
(1) 6 Bible Training School courses in and throughout the South Pacific each year.
(2) A congregation which will oversee our work as per the outreach program and work fund needs.
(3) See the printshop fully developed as a commercial venture which will provide our personal support as well as additional support for outreach needs and yet allow me the freedom to go out into the islands and help with WBS follow-up. This means a printshop that would be capable of operating without my personal presence for up to three weeks at a time. This means a workforce of dedicated people with the same goal in mind as mine.

Because we are pursuing the commercial Printshop to provide personal support for our family this means that our main needs at present are for the work fund. These funds are to be used in the Outreach program especially in regards to the World Bible School.

Below is a budget for 1990 in regards to the work funds needs.
TRAVEL to States $5000.00
Island Trips $4000.00

WORLD BIBLE SCHOOL
Advertising $700.00
Courses $2000.00
Postage $4000.00
NEWSLETTER $1200.00
TOTAL $16,900.00 ($1,408.34 per month)

We do so much appreciate the support you have given for our needs and pray that the Lord will richly bless you for your giving.

We hope that you had a Good Thanksgiving and have a Happy Holiday season.

I won't lie and tell you we will definitely be thinking of you in our 75-90 degree days. We will remember you though.
God be with you and your labors in His Kingdom.

Your servants because of the cross of Jesus,
