Volume 5; No.7                                                                          JULY 1982

Dear Brethren;

Greetings in the name of the Lord!

This time of the year always reminds me that you are all beginning your summer months and we begin our winter ones (The water down here whirlpools counterclockwise also.) We have had several nights with the temperature down in the mid-forties.

ROLLING STONES
We went down to Lae for a day this month and almost didn't get there. The government is paving the Highlands Highway from Goroka to Lae and they still lack about 50 miles from having it all done. Well the fifty miles seem more like 200. While driving through one of these places a dump truck had lost a LARGE rock off the back and we didn't see it in time due to dust, but we felt it. BANG !!!! I had just enough time to hit it off center not on the oil pan. The car was driveable but totally wiped out the left transverse link assembly. Terasa was flying on that side when the rock trailed on down the frame before being passed over.

WOMEN'S RETREAT
Kathy and the other missionary wives from Goroka drove up to Mt Hagen for a women's retreat. This time no one tried to steal the car. Mel Bowman lost all four tires and rims off his truck this month and Rick Niland got his chickens stolen AGAIN!

PREACHING THE WORD
During the school break (Bible School) Wamel (our national teacher) went up to the village of Korvega and spent a month with them. This congregation was begun in 1972 by Duane Morgan. They were re-begun last year. While there Wamel has been asked to preach for the Lutheran church as the people like hearing what the Bible has to say. He said he averaged from 20-80 in attendance.

PRINTING. UPDATE:
18,500 handouts for Willie Franklin campaign nationwide
20,000 - tracts in English (2 color)
200 copies of 34 pg book - Bible class
5OO copies of 16 pg. book- Letter to Lutherans
10,500 copies of 12 Pg periodical- (63,000 sheets)
12,000 sheets of class material for religious instruction classes in the local schools.

ELECTION FEVER
For three weeks of June the country was filing to the polls to vote for their representatives to stand for them the next 5 years. Elections here were something else. Some of the present members who spent millions for re-elections have been ousted. The people here took all the material they all wanted to give away but they voted for the men who showed the most common sense. It helps us appreciate these people more. The only problems came after the election results came in. In Kundiawa supporters of a losing candidate burned down the local sports club. club. In Mt Hagen a group burned down the District Headquarters. Mt Hagen is now under a curfew. Here in Goroka the atmosphere is one of a town under siege. The Australian High Commissioner, who was suppose to land in Goroka for a dedication Ceremony was not allowed to land and went to Madang instead. Things have quieted down considerably.

OUR SUPERSTARS
The International Primary School where Jason and Terasa attend had their annual sports day this month and the kids did us proud:
Jason: (8 yr group) 2nd- High Jump; 3rd- 5O meter sprint; and 2-3rd places in team events
Terasa:(10 yr group) 1st- High Jump; 1st- Triple jump; 1st- 800 meters; 1st-200 meter; 1st-100 meter;3rd- Long Jump; 1st- 400 meter relay-; 3-1st places in other team events; 3rd- open Shot Putt

The headmaster said that the whole staff meeting agreed that Terasa was the stand out in the sports meet. The winners were scheduled to go to Kundiawa and compete against 5 other other primary schools but this was cancelled due to the "social disturbances" (burning social clubs). The kids were very disappointed.

We appreciate your prayers, support and letters.

Yours servant because of the cross
