VOLUME 5; No. 9                                                                           September 1982

Dear Brethren;

CORRECTION: Last month it was falsely reported that Terasa won ribbons in the 8 yr events; she demanded that I tell you that she is really 12 years old and too BIG to enter the 8 yr events.

EVERYONE CAME TO THE SHOW
Every other year the Highlands Show is staged here in Goroka. The congregation always tries to have a booth where we can hand out tracts and talk with people about the Bible. People come from all over the world for the two days of activities which include thousands of local people dressed in traditional 'undress' .

HERE WAS THE BOOTH BETWEEN THE BEE/HONEY DISPLAY AND A FAST FOODS STALL.

WE HAD ALL KINDS OF PERSONS COMING BY FOR LITERATURE. PICTURED ON THE LEFT ARE TWO LADIES WHO WERE INVOLVED IN SOME OF THE TRIBAL SINGSING GROUPS. LANCE HELPING!

TO THE RIGHT IS AN INTERESTING FELLOW WHO CAME FOR HIS "FREE" LITERATURE.

----------------

We had over 34 different tracts both in Pidgin and English which we gave out.
We handed out 24,650+ pieces and signed up over 30 BCCS.
Show committee estimates were over 40,000 people were in attendance both days. (Preacher est. 50,000.)
Several tracts were taken by missionaries with other groups.
It was amazing how many people came by but wouldn't take a tract because it was free. We were the only booth giving everything away (even though there were several denominations with booths also).
All the booths were made out of native materials (grass) and Sunday PM two spectacular fires were started by fire bugs which wiped out three of the booths. They were started as a diversion so that other friends could steal from other booths when everyone rushed out side to see the fire.

6 CHICKENS GET BUS BACK ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Over the last year we have been raising broiler chickens for eating. Now we have another good use for them. SWAPPING ! At first the chicken business was to help our school boys earn a little money and have chicken dinner more often. But because of the thievery problem at the school I have raised them here by my house. We did, real good until our dog found out how much fun they are to play with. (They didn't get back up & play thought after she sat on them.)

Well back to the story: One of the church buses has been broken down with cracked cylinder head and no money to fix it. I approached the owner of a local junk yard and ask him if he liked chickens, he is American and of course said yes. We swapped 6 chickens for one cylinder head and the bus is "back on the road again".

15 CHICKENS + $350 = I RUNNING SUBARU
A young man named Aisi was baptized when Willy Franklin came in 1981 but had moved out to a government station some 50 miles from Goroka. During the last Willy campaign we found out he was there and he comes into Goroka every other week and we go out the other week and hold services there now. Jab went the first time and our family went the second time. One our way back we stopped at a Vocational School where they grow strawberries (we buy they every week when he comes into Goroka). They have about 20,000 plants and we know the manager from our Kundiawa days. We get berries from June-December.

Well back to the story: When we got back to Goroka I noticed a lot of water in the oil. I replaced head gaskets the next Saturday but found out that somehow the block had cracked inside and so back to the junk yard. This time it cost me 15 chickens and $350 for a used engine for the Subaru. (when it rains it pours!)

CONGREGATION DISCIPLINING FALLEN MEMBERS
During August the Goroka congregation began discipline against over 20 members who no longer want to have anything to do with the Lord and His church. Please pray with us for them! Two have repented but the rest still show indifference.

FROST VICTIM RELIEF UPDATE:
Relief operations for the frost victims (Aug report) have not been mounted yet by the government and we still have a very good opportunity to influence these people for good. If you can help please sent funds marked "frost relief". The sooner the better.

Until next month, Your servants for Christ
